Described as ‘Schiele goes fashion’, Pearl Bates’s Internationally collected works celebrate our hidden psyches, and come from an extraordinary world of dreams, enchantment, a touch of humour and lashings of glamour.
With a background in theatre, Pearl uses paint, ink, pencil and collage to explore the hidden, magical dimensions of real people who have captured the artist’s imagination. Fusing together a diverse range of inspirations such as haut couture, street culture, music, film, dance, architecture and the natural environment, Pearl creates work that is fresh, unique and exciting.
Previous exhibitions have been held at The Puccio Gallery in Manhattan, The Last Gallery in Zurich, DB International Fine Art in Marbella, The X Gallery in Berlin, Art Space Leguit in Antwerp and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others. Her work also features in two books – ‘Imagemakers’ and ‘The Big Book of Fashion Illustration’, both published by Mitchell Beazley. Recent commissions include a giant mural on the side of a building in central Brighton, sponsored by Southern Water.
A graduate from London’s Central Saint Martin’s College of Art with a degree in theatre design, Pearl spent time living in both Berlin and New York City before moving to Brighton, East Sussex, where she is currently based.
